Albanian winters can be harsh and extremely cold, especially for those in the mountains. Take Viez and Zegine for example. For this couple and their grandchild each day is an effort to provide themselves with even basic necessities.
Winter simply makes this life harder. Living about an hours drive from Elbasan on rough mountain roads, their small two roomed dwelling, devoid of the home comforts we would consider essential, has no insulation, plastic sheeting for windows and an open fire on their earthen floor as their only source of cooking and heating. It is hard to imagine how this family and many like them survive the freezing Albanian winters.
